Vaanartingi-documenting an iconic rock-climbing venture
We, a bunch of veteran rock climbers, are excited to announce the premiere of a documentary film on an iconic venture of 1983 that ushered in dramatic changes in the way rock climbing was done in India. The venture involved the successful scaling of a famous rock pinnacle in the Sahyadri, called Vanarlingi, aka Khadaparshee. We believe that the innovations done during this project enabled rock climbers in Maharashtra and elsewhere to extend their boundaries and undertake challenges that were considered undoable till then This documentary is the memoir of the venture's leader, Prof. Charunas Joshi, and recounts the struggles and efforts of the climbing team in fields ranging from metallurgy to manufacturing to project management to, of course, rock climbing
The team members used a piece of equipment that was neither available in India nor was information about its use readily obtainable. So they had to find a sample piece, research for appropriate material that was incally available, go through several stages of manufacturing and testing prototypes before finalising the item. The significance of testing lay in the fact that, in the absence of authorized testing labs for climbing gear, the team had to test their sample pieces using the fundamentals of climbing, and then take the crucial decision of relying on the manufactured pieces to finally make their attempt on the pinnacle. The climb itself involved many things experienced for the first time by climbers, Ike a multi-day attempt. climbing in the dark, and spending a night on a vertical surface (bivouacing") it was truly an expedition. It is notable that one can, in the way the project was executed, see concrete elements of leadership and management like problem solving, creativity-innovation, design thinking and dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity. After their success, the team decided to spread the new knowledge and climbing technique in an appropriate way they created a training programme that offered the blueprint of the new piece of equipment along with instruction and practice on its usage,
The premiere of the film is on March 16, 2024 at 7.00 p.m. in the main hall of Maharashtra Seva Sangh, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Mulund (W), Mumbai-400080. The film has been directed by the accomplished film director, Shri Kshitij Zarapkar.
After the premiere, this film will be presented exclusively on our YouTube channel so everyone can enjoy the same. A teaser is already uploaded on our channel and it gives the glimpse of our main film.
