UPL SAS ( UPL SAS ) along with NSL Sugars ( NSL Sugars ) entered into an MoU

Jointly implement a sustainable sweetener initiative covering an area of ​​~ 30,000 acres and benefiting 15,000 farmers through increased income and profitability.

August 21 , 2023: A global company providing sustainable agricultural products and solutions , UPL Sustainable Agriculture Solutions Limited ( UPL SAS ) MOU with NSL Sugars Limited, one of the leading sugar producers in the country, for sustainable sugarcane production with a 'farmers first' approach . The aim of this partnership is to promote eco-friendly and green agriculture through proper utilization of natural resources. The MoU with NSL will indirectly connect nearly 50,000 beneficiaries in the three states of Telangana , Karnataka and Maharashtra and will cover around one lakh acres of land . This partnership between UPL SAS and NSL Sugars is mutually beneficial. UPL SAS gained market access through this partnership while NSL Sugars reaped the benefits of sustainable sugarcane farming. The partnership is beneficial for the entire ecosystem of the sugar value chain, including consumers who want to buy sustainable and environmentally friendly sugar.

The primary objective of this partnership is to increase production per acre by at least 15% i.e. approximately 5 MT per acre. This will give the farmers an additional income of Rs.12,000 to Rs.15,000 . The partnership also aims to significantly reduce costs for farmers while promoting sustainable agricultural practices . These combined efforts are also expected to save approximately 6 lakh liters of water and 50 kg of urea per acre. As a result, eco-friendly , green and sustainable farming practices will be promoted and the adverse effects on the environment will be reduced.

This partnership will serve as an extension of UPL SAS' program for sustainable sugar production – the 'Sustainable Sweets' initiative. Earlier too the 'Shashwat Mithas' initiative has made significant progress by successfully operating in nearly 10,000 acres of land in Pune area of ​​Maharashtra. Over a period of three years, UPL SAS and NSL will take this partnership to the next level by implementing the initiative in a phased manner. The initial phase will cover 30,000 acres in the first year . Later, the scope will be gradually expanded to include the entire work area.

The initiative is expected to have a large scale and significant impact on 30,000 acres in the initial phase . This is expected to save approximately 1800 crore liters of water and this saving will be around 6 lakh liters per acre. Apart from this , a total of 1500 metric tonnes of urea i.e. approximately 50 kg of urea per acre will be reduced  The program also aims to reduce nitrous oxide ( GHG ) emissions by 25%. Nitrous oxide ( GHG ) is 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide. This partnership between UPL and NSL demonstrates their commitment to sustainable practices in sugarcane cultivation and their dedication to protecting and conserving resources , reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable farming practices.

To address the problem of shortage of sugarcane supply in the market, this partnership will support the needs of the industry by stabilizing the supply chain and ensuring adequate availability of sugarcane to the sugar mills. To ensure sustainable and eco-friendly sugarcane cultivation, this MoU will provide farmers with Good Agricultural Practices (Good Agronomical Practices GAP ) , implementation of Pronutiva (Complete Crop Protection and Nutrition Package) , mechanization related to cultivation , machinery for ploughing , boom sprayers , Nurture.Farm App ( Nurture .farm ) will provide sustainable solutions at every stage from the very beginning to the end of such insurance and inspection.
