ADAA campaign for artistes exceeds target
The crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in sudden disruption in the lives of people across the globe, including in India. Organizations and individuals across the spectrum are feeling the effect of the resultant downturn. Performing artistes and those in ancillary professions, whose livelihood depends on the gathering of people, have been particularly affected given that all physical performances and events now stand cancelled. Given this, a group of artistes and cultural practitioners came together to launch campaign ADAA (Assistance for Disaster Affected Artistes) to provide financial assistance to 100 artistes across 10 states. The crowd-funded campaign, which began in early April, has successfully raised an amount in excess of the initial target of INR 35 lakhs. This will enable the campaign to assist a total of 132 artists and their families with a financial package of INR 30,000/- each, over the next six months.
The  munificent donors, consisted of artistes, individuals and institutions.  The generous donation by HCL Concerts, an initiative by HCL dedicated to promoting and nurturing Indian classical performing arts, was the primary reason that the campaign was able to raise more than it had set out to collect, and in less than the accorded time. Early support from AR Rahman Foundation, Shaan, Vidya Balan and Abhay Deol helped the campaign gain traction and visibility almost immediately.
282 donors including those named above, campaign defenders Akarsh Khurana, Mihika Miranda, Prerana Shrimali, Quasar Thakore-Padamsee and Swati Apte, Bilal Zaidi and team at Our Democracy,  On-Ground Partners Jana Sanskriti (West Bengal), Imphal Talkies (Manipur), Samudaya (Karnataka), Assam Cultural Academy (Assam) Sanatkada Trust (Uttar Pradesh), Pehchaan (Rajasthan), Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch (Maharashtra), Chennai Kalai Kuzhu (Tamil Nadu), Nrityanjali Academy (Telangana) and Sarthi (Delhi); Githa Hariharan and Ishita Mehta at Indian Writers Forum, Orijit Sen, Rubin Vakil, Raghav Pasricha, Tanaji Dasgupta, Smita Misra Devansh Sharma, Rewa Khare-Sharma, Mindworkz, Shivangini Yeashu Yuvraj and Sveta Kilpady, Abhay Adhikari, members of the media and others including well wishers who chose to remainin incognito ensured the success of the campaign by their singular or grouped efforts.
Contributions to the campaign are now closed and the campaigners are now working towards the systematic disbursement of the funds raised.
The campaigners Shubha Mudgal, Aneesh Pradhan, Sameera Iyengar, Mona Irani, Arundhati Ghosh and Rahul Vohra are grateful for the support given to the ADAA campaign, and thank every one who has helped make sure that at least 132 artistes across this country will get much needed livelihood support to tide over the COVID crisis.
